About Michael S. Axt | Attorney at Law
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1945, Michael majored in psychology at Rutgers University before earning his law degree from Rutgers School of Law – Camden in 1970. After a judicial clerkship, Michael spent more than three years practicing criminal defense in New Jersey before relocating to Denver. In 1974, he and two colleagues established The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Colorado. Since entering private practice in 1979, he has tirelessly defended the criminally accused in state and federal courts in Colorado and other jurisdictions throughout the country.
Michael is highly respected by judges, colleagues, and adversaries. Many organizations recognize him for his outstanding lawyering ability and for his professional ethics. He is a member of The National Trial Lawyers, an organization limited to the top 100 lawyers from each state. For 25 years he has been listed as an AV Preeminent Attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest professional and ethical designation. Michael is also a Colorado Super Lawyer in criminal defense, a distinction reserved for the top five percent of Colorado lawyers. Additionally, he is a member of The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, The Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, and The Colorado Bar Association.
Michael is also nationally known for his annual Season’s Greetings cards which reflect his idiosyncratic sense of humor and aversion to political correctness. Although very serious about defending his clients, it’s his way of showing that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. He and Gail, his wife of more than 35 years, have two grown sons. The boys, each gifted, talented, and successful, had the good sense to pursue careers other than law.
